Recruiting and retaining our general practice workforce |
|
The recruitment of GPs to the south-east region is an ongoing challenge. SGPN has adopted a variety of strategic approaches to tackle this nationwide dilemma.
In the short term, we can address the needs of your practice by advertising your vacancy for GPs or practice staff free of charge on our website. If you think a more detailed analysis of your practice staffing is necessary, we can help you develop a complete recruitment plan.
Make us your first stop in finding a locum – we have excellent contacts. In addition, our staff can guide and assist you in Area of Need applications and Remoteness Area Classification incentives. Welcoming overseas trained doctors with practical support is another service we happily provide.
We can also coordinate a regional approach to attracting GPs. Where practices would like to work together in a cooperative recruitment promotion, we can assist in developing and managing a professional, targeted campaign.
Longer term measures include encouraging young people to consider medicine as a career by promoting general practice at school career days and through our annual school scholarship. We also invest considerable effort in encouraging medical students into rural areas during their training and we benefit in this regard from our close relationships with the Australian National University Rural Medical School.
Recruitment is clearly important but at SGPN we also work hard to support and retain our existing GP workforce. We offer GP health checks and can arrange confidential access to counsellors outside the region. Our education and practice support programs offer direct ongoing support to general practice and of course our clinical programs are designed to complement the work of our practitioners.
