SGPN is one of 111 federally-funded networks of general practice throughout Australia whose role it is to support GPs and their practice staff by assisting with recruitment, training and practice management.
In addition, SGPN employs allied health professionals to run a range of successful clinical programs through general practices including youth health, mental health and Aboriginal health.
We provide support to a network of more than 200 general practitioners, 120 practice nurses and over 160 practice staff working in 58 practices throughout the south-east of New South Wales.
Our region covers 52,000km, 16 local government areas and a population of approximately 194,000.
Our Mission
To provide advocacy and support to general practice in the delivery of high quality health services to our community.
Our History
The organisation was incorporated on 24 October 1994 as the SE NSW Division of General Practice and has since undertaken a wide range of activities aimed at encouraging GPs to work together and link with other health professionals and the community to improve the quality of health care at the local level.
Programs over the past ten years have included drug and alcohol service, asthma education, suicide prevention, Aboriginal otitis media and Aboriginal diabetes awareness and prevention programs, men's health, chronic pain management, diabetes educator program, cardiac rehabilitation, integration of diabetes program and consumer liaison.
In more recent years the Southern General Practice Network (as it became known following a name change in December 2007) has focused on a whole of practice approach and developed comprehensive workforce support strategies, practice management support, IM/IT support, quality education and training, chronic diseases support, population health strategies, general practice integration strategies and general practice advocacy.
